From Snow To Spring? Welcome To Arkansas!

Hey everybody how's it going on this bitterly cold morning.?! I hope everybody got through the first official Winter 2017/2018 Snow Storm for Arkansas. I can't call it really the "first" because Friday areas in East Arkansas got upwards of about 3" of Snow in some spots. But this storm was a bit more expansive then the last. The last storm had a very narrow band of snow (it was very heavily forecasted by myself, and other forecasters), this storm here was also very heavily forecasted by a lot of meteorologist. Now I must say right here and now, that the Arkansas Department of Transportation really rocked out on those freeways man, those guys got out there as early as Monday Morning pre-treating the highways in preparation for the storm, they really rocked! I'm very proud of them for braving the weather prepping the roads, they did a good job. Now I also must say, we (Weather Forecasters) really hit it with this storm, it didn't bring especially mind blowing snow totals to the state, but it was a major checkmate in terms of forecasting. Everything went down exactly how, and where it was expected to go down, and the totals have held true for the most part around the state. Now the only thing that was a little off as far as I can see is timing, I was holding it off until Midnight at first, which was way too late. I know National Weather Service was holding it off until like 9pm or so for Central Arkansas and that was a bit too late. But with these winter systems, once that cold air and moisture cross those mountains in North Arkansas there's nothing stopping it. The stuff started falling here in Central Arkansas around 6pm, and lasted until about a solid 2am Tuesday morning, with at total of 1.5-2" around the Little Rock Metro area. Now there is areas in South Arkansas that saw up to 6" of Snow! That's insane!!!

This is via The National Weather Service in North Little Rock, they came up with this really nice map of who got some of the highest totals over the entire duration of the snow event (from Monday Evening through Tuesday Morning) as you can see Camden Arkansas came in with the highest total of a half foot of snow! That's insane!!

Now, what's next in the world of weather? Well the MAIN STORY moving into this weekend is the bitter COLD! Lows projected to be in the SINGLE DIGITS this morning in certain areas, Wind Chill Advisories in the NEGATIVE! This is Seriously DEADLY Cold right here.... This is the type of cold that will KILL you in 20 minuets! Remember beginning of 2018? New Years? This is THAT type of cold! STAY INSIDE, STAY WARM.! Most Schools that called off yesterday during the snow storm have also called it off today due to roads still being iced over! Most of the snow in the residential areas like neighborhoods, etc, are still Iced over because we never got above freezing on Tuesday so the snow is now a solid sheet of ice at this point.... It might melt a little more today. The warm up doesn't come until tomorrow (Thursday).... Now speaking of warm, it will get into the 60s this weekend! I know, Crazy right? Just had snow, and now 60s and possible thunderstorms!
There will be another frontal boundary moving through on Sunday evening and night, during that day the temperatures are projected to be as high as the low 60s in Central Arkansas. With that front comes the potential for some rumbles of thunder, and MAYBE some high winds. I don't see a threat for Severe Weather at this time, behind that front comes yet another shot at cold air (No moisture associated with it though). Somebody asked me if I see another chance for snow in the forecast... The GFS is hinting at ANOTHER Winter System in the first week of February, at that far out in the long range? WHO CARES?! But of course I'll watch it! Thanks everybody for coming here to the Arkansas Weather Hawk's Blog, Be Safe, and be warm, and have a Good Morning Everybody!
